The Broads are taking a hiatus

Breaking News:  the Broads are taking a hiatus to reorganize and relaunch the site.

Please peruse old homepages and movies, tv, music lists in the meantime.

New posts returning End of Summer 2012!

April 20-26

Current and from the Vault Favorites:

Movies:

Space Cowboys

Obsessed with these guys, so no matter the cheese factor, they are all fun to watch.

Music:

The Band

In memory of Levon Helm who sang lead on my favorite The Band song and drummed on most of them, I’ve been listening to their discography on shuffle.  RIP, Levon.

TV:

Scandal

Loving Shonda Rhimes turn away from medical towards political. Plus with Tony Goldwyn as the president, everyone wins.

Quotes:

Movies:

I’m gonna go read a book with pictures now.

– Marty, Cabin in the Woods

Music:

I pulled into Nazareth, I was feelin’ about half past dead; I just need some place where I can lay my head.”Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?” He just grinned and shook my hand, and “No!”, was all he said.

– The Weight by The Band (written by Robbie Robertson)

TV:

Everything you say sounds really creepy when you’re not wearing pants.

– Jess, New Girl

What the Broads are Anticipating:

The Dictator; May 16

Had no real abiding interest in this film ’til Trailer #2 appeared…the 2nd layer is more more intriguing.

April 13-19

Current and From the Vault Favorites:

Movies:

Cabin in the Woods

Very Friday the 13th appropriate.

Music:

Days by Real Estate

This band made my “40 Reasons I’m Sad I’m Missing Coachella” playlist.  They’re happy without being too loud about it.  It’s a good album to put on as spring is setting in and you drive around with the music turned up and the windows rolled down.  Try it, I promise you’ll like it.

TV:

Don’t Trust the B in Apt 23

It’s the 13th…this has 23 in the title…it seemed to be connected somehow.

Quotes:

Movies:

Get it? Liver alone! Liver…Leave her…get it?

– Stu Scream

Music:

The next time that I caught my own reflection it was on its way to meet you
Thinking of excuses to postpone.
You never looked like yourself from the side but your profile could not hide
The fact you knew I was approaching your throne.

–Crying Lightning by Arctic Monkeys

TV:

“Actually MY favorite movie is Brigadoon.”

– Lennon Best Friends Forever

What the Broads are Anticipating:

The Five-Year Engagement; April 27

This Machine by The Dandy Warhols (releasing April 24, 2012)

This has been a go-to band for a long time for me…when I need something dark, gritty, that emotion that feels uncomfortable but I can’t quite put a name on.  I don’t know what category I would put their music in, but it definitely gets under my skin in all the right ways.  I’m interested to see what the albums does to me.

April 6-12

Current and from the Vault Favorites:

Movies:

Suspicion

Hitchcock? Grant?  C’mon.  Need I say more?

Music:

Stumbled across Mayer Hawthorne’s The Walk on the radio (of all places) and love the mix of doo-wop and explicit/modern lyrics.  Kind of incredible.

TV:

Mad Men

I miss the 50s clothes, and kinda wish there was more “dated” inappropriateness, you know, like smoking in a baby’s face…but alas I still love it.

Quotes:

Movies:

Johnnie Aysgarth (Cary Grant): Well, well. You’re the first woman I’ve ever met who said yes when she meant yes.

Suspicion

Music:

Sometimes I feel like I’m just a lost kid,
stumbling through these towns,
stuck between the waves.
Nothing feels the same.

I need an anchor that never lets go,
I need someone to call, hear a voice I know.
Something that feels like home.

The Apache Relay, Lost Kid

TV:

Julia: That’s where you’re supposed to say, “No, honey. You’re not a control freak.”

Joel: Does telling me exactly what I should say make you feel like less of a control freak?

Julia: All right fine, this is who I am. I am going to except it. I’m a control freak.
 Parenthood, Season 1, “The Situation

What the Broads are Anticipating:

The Big C; April 8 season 3 premiere (can’t wait? premiere is available on Sho.com)

Glen Hansard (solo) releases Song of Good Hope on June 19 (we realize this is a ways away…but well, just can’t help it.)

March 30-April 5

Current and from the Vault Favorites:

Movies:

Blue Hawaii

Elvis made a slew of movies. A lot of them are practically unwatchable.  This is a good one though; just keep Elvis singing all the time, and no one will notice the story line (for the record, despite predictability, this one is heads and tails above the rest).  Angela Lansbury plays his mama too, which alone is worth a watch.  Available on Netflix streaming.

Music:

fun.

They were amazing at SXSW. One of the best shows I saw.  I’m not usually one of those people that turns on mainstream radio because I hate how they play the same songs over and over and over again, but I’ve found myself constantly clicking them on my dial in hopes to hear this band.  That says something.  A lot actually.

TV:

Missing

Might be too early to tell whether this will last — trying to keep up a chase for more than a few episodes is difficult.  That said, the first two episodes are fast paced, action-packed, even some laughs.  Give it a try.

Quotes:

Movies:

Bernice: My dad says that childhood is the happiest time of my life. But, I think he’s wrong. I think my mom’s right. She says that…
BirdeeChildhood is what you spend the rest of your life trying to overcome. That’s what momma always says. She says that beginnings are scary, endings are usually sad, but it’s the middle that counts the most. Try to remember that when you find yourself at a new beginning. Just give hope a chance to float up. And it will, too…

– Hope Floats

Music:

I admit that these answers that I seek
Are all to questions I’ve never known
But I pray to keep on looking for as long as I can roam
And when the world finally fulfills me
I will not forget my way back home

My Way Back Home by Dawes

TV:

You’ve never considered yourself a star, you get mad and correct the press if they call you that, but you are, and not only in your work, you are the star that lightens my existence. — Don Gummer

[So this was said on TV, technically, but its "reality."  Meryl Streep's husband may be one of the best.]

What the Broads are Anticipating:

Scandal; April 5 on ABC

Boys & Girls by Alabama Shakes (releasing April 10, 2012)

Only 23 years old and Brittany Howard is already making herself known to the music world.  This album has been highly anticipated for the last few months and the band is playing sold out show after sold out show.  I fell in line with the rest of the world when this single was released, I hope the rest holds true.

March 23-29

Current and from the Vault Favorites:

Movies:

Tiny Furniture

Definitely was late to the game on this one.  It was actually eeing the promo’s for HBO’s new series GIRLS that spawned my finally sitting down and watching it.  Verdict:  I liked it.  Definitely New York, Indie, strange, bizarre-style storytelling.  Think a younger, female, more foul mouthed/drug using Woody Allen.  Definitely worth a look, and seems like just the beginning for Ms. Dunham.

Music:

The Hunger Games Soundtrack

I love movie soundtracks.  I get frustrated when I watch a movie and then the songs aren’t actually on the release OR when the songs that are on the release aren’t in the movie.  I don’t know what’s going to happen tonight when I see The Hunger Games.  But after being ultra disappointed in the most recent Twilight’s music choices, I couldn’t feel more opposite about The Hunger Games.  Producer/musician T-Bone Burnett basically made a list of our favorite bands: Taylor Swift, The Civil Wars, Glen Hansard, Neko Case, The Low Anthem.  Now fingers crossed they use them in the movie.

TV:

The Riches

Great series! Dark, funny, smart…of course they canceled it.  Keep an eye out for current series regulars from shows like Shameless and The Vampire Diaries (available for streaming on Netflix).

Quotes:

Movies:

Marketa: You just replaced your struggles with different struggles…but you’re still struggling, and you always find something to struggle with.  It’s such a hard existence, is it not?  To always fight a battle?

You wanted this.  You can’t say you didn’t want it.  And now you’re rejecting it… I just wonder how do you do it?  Cuz you are constantly struggling aren’t you?

Glen: No.

– The Swell Season (2011)

Music:

Was your hunger your awareness of salvation
As your chances go slipping to the past
You’re tortured by the changing of the seasons
And each grain of sand in the glass

God cage the songbird
Before the feathers run brown
God bar the windows
That we may though hollow be sound

–Cage the Songbird by The Low Anthem

TV:

Guy: Buy you a drink?
Brooke: Okay, guy in need of a clue. Here’s one. Women send signals. That was a brush off. Before you dip into your shallow pool of wit, let me paint us a picture and save us both the trouble. Here’s your evening. You are going to slink back off to your buddies, laugh this off, get wasted, go home, and make nice with yourself. But don’t be thinking of me because even your fantasy of me isn’t interested in you.

–One Tree Hill (episode 1.20)

What the Broads are Anticipating:

Dark Shadows; May 11

My Head Is an Animal by Of Monsters and Men (releasing April 3, 2012)

Technically, this album released in Iceland (the band’s home country) in 2011, but next week it finally becomes available to the world.  These SXSW darlings are making their way in the US, so take note now.  Catch the indie folk band on tour through April (if you can, they’re selling out quick).

March 16-22

Current and from the Vault Favorites:

Movies:

Overboard

Music:

Glen Hansard

One of the best moments of SXSW 2012 (so far) was seeing Glen Hansard play solo for about 200 people…and then having him come to the edge of the stage as the crowd gathered around for an intimate acoustic number.  That’s when you know you’re part of something special.  Plus, he’s just a really nice guy.

TV:

Smash

It just makes this Broad happy.

Quotes:

Movies:

Working on the Same Painting: Sorry, I’m late.
Having a Breakthrough Day: That’s okay, time doesn’t exist.

– Slacker

Music:

I wanna sit you down and talk
I wanna pull back the veils
And find out what it is I’ve done wrong
I wanna tear these curtains down
I want you to meet me somewhere
Tonight in this old tourist town
And we’ll go

– Low Rising by Glen Hansard

TV:

Ethel:  We’re girls?

Lucy: If you divide everyone up into “boys” and “girls” we’re girls.

Ethel: Oh, I never thought of it like that.

– One Tree Hill

What the Broads are Anticipating:

Hunger Games; March 23

Nothing’s Ever Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now by Justin Townes Earle (releasing March 27, 2012)

One of the few that I believe to be as good recorded as he is live.  The only problem with listening to the recording is that you can’t see the look in his eyes that proves he feels every word he sings.  It’s beautiful and heartbreaking.

March 9-15

Current and from the Vault Favorites:

Movies:

Desk Set

One of the best duos, witty, quippy, loving, romantic, nostalgic.  What more do you want?

Music:

Counting Crows

I loved this band in high school.  LOVED.  I would still rank this song as one of my favorites, though, I don’t think I really understood it as a teenager.   This is one of those bands that after a few years, when you listen to them (like now, as an adult) it’s almost as if I’m discovering a new band.  They’ll be playing at SXSW, and it’ll be my first time to see them live.  I can’t wait!

TV:

Awake

From the gloriously split mind of creator, Kyle Killen, comes a series that satisfies your need for procedural dramas (2 in 1) and familial/romantic relationships.

Quotes:

Movies:

One must never take anything for granted.

– Baby Boom

Music:

I want to be a lion
Everybody wants to pass as cats
We all want to be big big stars, but we got different reasons for that

Believe in me because I don’t believe in anything
and I want to be someone to believe

–Mr. Jones by Counting Crows

TV:

Make it a double. It’s gonna be a long fall.

– Nolan, Revenge

What the Broads are Anticipating:

The Return of MAD MEN, AMC, March 25

Happy To You by Miike Snow (releasing March 27, 2012)

Miike Snow is one of the artists I’m most excited to see at SXSW this week, and the right after that, I get a new album.  This is only the second for the Swedish indie pop star.  The first had his hit Animal (which I’m sure you heard), and I’m excited to see what this second has to offer.  PS. The video is a little disturbing in parts.

March 2-8

Current and from the Vault Favorites:

Movies:

Tall Tale

Almost 17 years old, this was a childhood favorite of mine.  Trying to remember if I saw this or Dirty Dancing first — and can’t for the life of me figure it out.  I say that only because I’m trying to pinpoint when my undying love for Patrick Swayze began.  If he isn’t your cup of tea (how could he not be?) check out the rest of this STELLAR cast: Oliver Platt, William H. Macy, Catherine O’Hara, Scott Glenn, Nick Stahl, and Burgess Meredith

Music:

SPEAK

Getting ready for SXSW I’ve been scanning “Must See” lists, and through that I recently discovered SPEAK.  I feel like lately I’ve been listening to either Folk/Americana or gritty rock (not sure if that’s a genre, but it is now).  It’s nice to have some indie/rock pop added in there.  And they’re Austinites, so they deserve to be shown some love.  I’ve officially added them to my own schedule and you should, too.

TV:

Bethenny Ever After

I rarely (if ever?) pick real reality shows (meaning not Top Chef or Amazing Race).  There is something I can’t pin point about her that I really like.  Brashness? Vulnerability? Struggle? Lack of Housewife drama (its her show, not a group of women fighting for attention).

Quotes:

Movies:

Melissa: Why do you call him the extreme?
Dusty: Because Bill IS the extreme. There was one time, he has a bottle of Jack Daniels, he was butt naked.
Bill: I was not naked…
Dusty: He strolls up to the twister, and he says, HAVE A DRINK! And he chucks the bottle in, and it never hits the ground.
Bill: [to Melissa] Honey, these are a list of lies.  You see there was a bad Bill, an evil Bill, and I killed him

Aunt Meg: He didn’t keep his part of the bargain, did he?
Jo: Which part?
Aunt Meg: To spend his life pining for you, and die miserable and alone.
Jo: Is that too much to ask?

Music:

Now I know that I’m not
All that you got
I guess that I, I just thought
Maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
But our friends are back
So let’s raise a cup
‘Cause I found someone to carry me home

– We Are Young by Fun.

TV:

Lucy: I want the names to be unique and euphonious.
Ricky: Okay. Unique if it’s a boy, and Euphonious if it’s a girl.

Ricky: What do you know about rice?
Fred: Well, I had it thrown at me on one of the darkest days in my life.
Mr. Merriweather: Oh, you study numerology?
Lucy: Of course.
Mr. Merriweather: I’m a 1.
Lucy: I’m a 3.
Ricky: I’m a 5.
Mr. Merriweather: We’re all odd, aren’t we?

What the Broads are Anticipating:

Port of Morrow by The Shins (releasing March 20, 2012)

I remember squealing with delight (yes, sometimes I squeal when I’m happy) when Natalie Portman told Zac Braff in Garden State that the Shins would change his life.  Finally, the band was getting its due.  And now, finally, we’re getting a new album.  2007 (when Wincing the Night Away was released) was a long time ago, people.  You should not make us wait that long.

February 24-March 1

Current and from the Vault Favorites:

Movies:

Six Days Seven Nights

Besides the inaccuracy of the title (seriously, how can you have 6 days & 7 nights? It would be 6 nights & 7 days…but that’s neither here nor there).  I love this movie. It’s almost 15 years old now — and Harrison is gorgeous and Anne is cute/quirky/sexy. It has everything from laughs to sexual tension (that From here to Eternity kiss on the beach?? C’mon, it’s hot).  Hands down good time at the moviesyou.

Music:

Hurry Up We’re Dreaming by M83

This has become my go-to album when I need to calm myself down.  There’s a reason this was one of the best albums of 2011.  It envelopes you.  As each song swells, so does everything inside of me, lifting a weight off so that I can breathe again.

TV:

Parenthood

I know I’ve picked it before, and to be honest, I’ll pick it again.  It makes me cry just about every week.  Next Tuesday is the season finale (don’t get me started! Finale in February! Not cool, Katims/NBC.)

Quotes:

Movies:

Kate: A healthy person is someone who expresses what they’re feeling inside. Express, not repress.
Luc: In that case, you must be one of the healthiest people in the world.

Kate: We were happy. I’ve never been so happy.
Luc: When people tell me they are happy, my ass begins to twitch.

– French Kiss

Music:

Send your dreams
Where nobody hides
Give your tears
To the tide
No Time
No Time
There’s no end
There is no goodbye
Disappear
With the night
No Time
No Time

Wait by M83

TV:

We will all at some time in our lives, fall. Life is so very fragile, we are all vulnerable, and we will all at some point in our lives, fall, we will all fall.
We must carry this in our hearts, that what we have is special, that it can be taken from us, and that when it is taken from us, we will be tested. We will be tested to our very souls. We will all be tested.
It is these times, it is this pain, that allows us to look inside ourselves.

What the Broads are Anticipating:

Friends with Kids; March 9

You still have to wait a few weeks….but this looks good for the cast alone.

Delta Spirit  by Delta Spirit (releasing March 13, 2012)

This is one of those bands I just can’t stop smiling every time I see them play.  This is the SoCal rockers 3rd album, but I’ve seen them play so many times over the past year, the songs are already familiar to me.  I somehow managed to get my hands on an advanced copy, and the recordings have not let me down.  Now I just can’t wait to get it on vinyl!

February 17-23

Current and from the Vault Favorites:

Movies:

Now & Then

Just discovered one of my favorite TV directors, Lesli Linka Glatter directed this childhood epic.  Great family film and stellar soundtrack.

Music:

Arrow by Heartless Bastards

I love that Heartless Bastards released this album on Valentine’s Day.  Can anything be named more appropriately?  I also love that this album was recorded in Austin.  And more than anything, I just love this album.  It’s been awhile since I’ve put something new on repeat, but this wins.

TV:

Ed

Not the highest quality video, but it IS a high quality series. Sadly, still not available on DVD. What’s wrong with you people?!

Quotes:

Movies:

The older you get, the more rules they are going to try and get you to follow. You just gotta keep on livin’, man. L-I-V-I-N.

Wooderson; Dazed and Confused (inspired this:Butch Walker and the Black Widows video…allll right)

Music:

With her killer graces and her secret places
That no boy can fill with her hands on her hips
Oh and that smile on her lips
Because she knows that it kills me
With her soft french cream
Standing in that doorway like a dream
I wish she’d just leave me alone
Because french cream won’t soften them boots
And french kisses will not break that heart of stone
With her long hair falling
And her eyes that shine like a midnight sun
Oh-o she’s the one, she’s the one

She’s the One by Bruce Springsteen

TV:

This is a horrible neighborhood. There are youths everywhere! Youths!!!

Schmidt; New Girl ”Valentine’s Day”

What the Broads are Anticipating:

GCB (aka Good Christian Belles); March 4 on ABC

Wrecking Ball by Bruce Springsteen; March 6

It’s The Boss’s 17th studio album.  That is crazy.

February 10-17

Current and from the Vault Favorites:

Movies:

The Other Sister

We are doing a theme in the movie department of this homepage…wanna know what it is?  Garry Marshall.  It’s based on the video at the bottom of this page for ATX: a Television Festival

This isn’t one of his top 10 (Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, Princess Diaries) but it does make me happy and tearful each time I see it.  ”Oh, really?”  Yes, really.

Music:

Dawes

If you missed Parenthood this week, you missed one of the Broads’ favorite bands doing their first guest starring television role!  You can watch above, but I would suggest you just going to NBC.com and watching the whole thing.  They don’t actually play a set on the show, unfortunately, so I made up for it with my record player.

TV:

This is technically TV, right? SuperBowl Ad.  I didn’t see it during the game because I didn’t watch it (shameful, I know).  I know this is predictable, but I can’t help it…my John Hughes spidey sense is tingling and I love ALL of it.  Just missing Alan Ruck.

Quotes:

Movies:

Annie: Mrs. Burbridge, would you come over here for a moment? Has it escaped your attention that these children have head to toe poison oak?
Adele: Well no, I… well yes, but…
Annie: But WHAT? My children are in need of medical assistance! And you can sit here and smugly lecture me on the importance of tests? Tests which exist to pigeonhole childrens potential, a thing which cannot possibly be measured, least of all by anal compulsive HUNS! And my husband may be a “large child,” but that’s none of your business! And my children may be rotten, but they’re MINE. And I think that they’re bright, and sensitive, so I have no doubts whatsoever about their intelligence. I do however have serious doubts about YOURS.

Overboard

Music:

And I think it’s gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I’m not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I’m a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone

Rocket Man by Elton John

TV:

Dwight: Angela, this child is definitely mine…he looks just like me.
Angela: Every baby looks just like you…your face kinda looks like a baby.
Dwight: Need I remind you that we were together a month before the wedding.
Angela: That is completely untrue.
Dwight: Completely true.
Angela: No.
Dwight: Remember you said that Robert was not fulfilling you, then I said that I could fulfill, then you said I’d like to see you try, then I kissed you with the force of a thousand waterfalls.
What the Broads are Anticipating:

You might have a little while to wait (but who are you kidding? March 1 will be here before you know it) and Awake WILL deliver.  From Lone Star creator Kyle Killen, Harry Potter alum Jason Isaacs, and uber-series producers Howard Gordon (24, Homeland, X-Files) how can you NOT be stoked for this.

ATX: a Television Festival; June 1-3, 2012 in Austin, Texas…and a word from Garry Marshall

Ghoststory by School of Seven Bells (releasing February 28, 2011)

This will be the third album by the space/dream pop duo Benjamin Curtis and Alejandra Deheza.  The concept of the album was that every person has his or her ghosts that follow us around.  And listening to this song, you do feel haunted.  I’m excited to see if the rest of the album follows.

February 3-9

Current and from the Vault Favorites:

Movies:

Baby Boom

with all the Oscar Buzzing, thought I’d go old school and kinda mainstream.  This movie owns my heart…particularly the 80s/90s style “score” that I could probably sing to you now.

Music:

Jackson Browne

Jackson Browne is a state of mind.  And it’s the state of mind I’ve been in recently.  One of the greatest things that I love most about Jackson Browne is how many songs I discover that he wrote that I had no idea about.  He made so many other people famous, that every time I discover a song was his (and then hear his version of it), it’s like Christmas.

TV:

One Tree Hill

Suppress your groans, please.  You must take it for what it is. Predictable and overly dramatic? Yes, but I love it…and not even in that “it’s so bad, it’s good” way. I love it flat out.  This past week — Tyler Hilton aka Chris Keller’s screams in the kitchen, reminded me of Daniel Stern in Home Alone and for a few minutes I relished in joyous laughter.

Also note, its the 9th and final season of the last show from the original WB network.  Bow your heads to the last one in the ring.

Quotes:

Movies:

[last lines — as the pair are outnumbered and pinned down]

Butch Cassidy:  Wait a minute — you didn’t see Lefors out there did you?

Sundance Kid: Lefors? No, why?

Butch Cassidy: Thank God for that. For a moment there I thought we were in trouble.

– Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Music:

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

–Imagine by John Lennon

TV:

Walter White: I am not in danger, I am the danger.  – Breaking Bad

What the Broads are Anticipating:

Big Miracle; in theaters today!  [what can I say, I'm a sucker for animal movies...and Barrymore...and Krasinski]

Some Nights by Fun. (releasing February 21, 2012)

I’m obsessed with this band.  The New York based indie pop band has formed a few years ago, and released their debut in 2009, but I just discovered them.  Come on, their name is Fun. The “.” is part of the name.  You can’t get much better than that.

January 27-February 2

Movies:

The Help

The more “Oscar” films that emerge, the more I realize this is my favorite for the year’s Awards Season. Wonder if others feel the same?

Music:

The Church of Rock and RollFoxy Shazam

I do love bands from Ohio (The National, The Black Keys, Guided By Voices).  Foxy Shazam formed 8 years ago, and though I was a little late to the game, I was ready for this album (their fourth studio).  At their heart, they’re a rock band, and I can’t listen to this without wanting to rock out, too.

TV:

SportsNight

If you like Krause in Parenthood and Charles in Good Wife, take a look at where they “started.”  Don’t forget, Huffman who is finishing up Desperate Housewives this season.  Plus this Summer Sorkin returns with what is being described as Sports Night meets West Wing:  The Newsroom

Quotes:

Movies:

Ally: Where’s my coffee pot?
Colin: I broke it. If you were on Twitter you would know that already.

What’s Your Number?

Music:

So, bless my heart.
Bless my mind.
I got so much to do, I ain’t got much time
So, must be someone up above saying “Come on girl! You got to get back up!!”
“You got to hold on…”

–Hold On by Alabama Shakes

TV:

Jane: Wait Big Dave is coming to town? God I love your dad!
Alex: Ugh, the man hates me for no reason.
Everyone: You left Dave at the altar!!!

–Happy Endings (Episode: Meet the Parrots)

What the Broads are Anticipating:

Man on a Ledge; January 27

I don’t think this film will reinvent the genre or anything, but lately I haven’t gotten too excited about anything coming out…and this gives me a twinge of anticipation.  Great looking cast, suspense, and hopefully a good old fashion Blockbuster.

Go Fly a Kite – Ben Kweller (releasing Feb. 7, 2012)

Texas-based (GO TEXAS!) Kweller releases his latest studio album on his own terms (meaning on his own label.)  I’ve been a fan of his for at least 10 years now, if not more, playing his records non-stop during my college radio station days.   His music takes me home.

The Apartment

Recently Cameron Crowe mentioned this as on his “all time favorite” films list, and it reminded me how much I love it too.  Funny-wise, Emotional-wise, Important-wise, this film surpasses all “classic” qualifications.  For a more recent Cameron Crowe helmed film: We Bought a Zoo makes it on my 2011 favorites.

I’m not “in” enough with the Ryan Adams crowd to have long debates over which album is better, and what phase he was in when he was writing it, and why some are masterpieces while others are just a giant “screw you” to the label.  I personally love the differences of the albums, and I don’t want to know the backstories.  I do know people judged this album and some called it a failure.  I think it’s quirky and beautiful.  But what is a Halloweenhead?

TV:

ATX: a Television Festival

This week’s TV pick is a little “outside the box” — instead of a series, we are choosing A FESTIVAL (Austin, TX June 1-3, 2012).  Completely new style of festival — celebrating past, current and upcoming programs through screenings, panels, parties, and premieres.  See some familiar TV faces in the promo?

If you like TV at ALL…check out their Kickstarter and give — if you can only spare a buck, do it!  How hard is that?

Quotes:

Movies:

Hal: Well, let’s say that since you were little, you always dreamed of getting a lion. And you wait, and you wait, and you wait, and you wait but the lion doesn’t come. And along comes a giraffe. You can be alone, or you can be with the giraffe.
Oliver: I’d wait for the lion.
Hal: That’s why I worry about you.

Well, my money’s no good when I’m up to no good
No good ever comes from it, honest
I got a really good heart
I just can’t catch a break
If i could I’d treat you like you wanted me to I promise

Elena:  You can’t kiss me again

Damon: I know.

Elena: You can’t. It’s not right.

Damon: No, it’s right. It’s just not right now.

Born to DieLana Del Rey (releasing January 31, 2012)

Maybe she didn’t blow you away with her Saturday Night Live performance last week, but Video Games is one of my favorite songs of 2011, and I am pumped about this album.  Her wiki page (that I’m thankful to still have for the time being) says her influences are Britney Spears, Elvis Presley, and Antony and the Johnsons — which just makes me love her more.
